USB mass storage on XP

After wasting a weekend trying to install xp from USB stick and learning it's just not fucking doable, I gave up and bought a USB DVDR. The Micro xp install was easy and I got all the devices to work except WPA2 for wifi. The WEP works but not WPA2. Also for some reason it does not assign drive letters when I connect USB mass storage devices like external hard drive. I wanna boot from USB hard drive and not use NAND flash. Anyone knows how to fix this?
