Yes you can. MicroXP is about 300MB + drivers = ca. 450 MB
Re: can you install microxp on the build in 512mb drive?
I have microXP installed on a 512mb unit with its drivers. Every things working but no onscreen keyboard. after installing it, and all the drivers it used 252mb's, leaving 246mb's of space.
I deleted the original partitions and made it into a single partition, however I had to use a recovery cd (bootable DOS cd) in order to partition and format the drive, and then reboot to install XP.
Note: XP Home/Pro itself will not install on a 512mb drive though its small enough to fit it wants 1gb of space to install, nor will the webDT allow you to install onto a usb drive.

nLite and a valid install cd of xp is by far the best route. the kit even allows for redirected programs, profiles, temp, and overide of 1GB install limit. keep the system on the flash ide and eveything else on a usb2 or cf card (lx is best).
it recreates a new install cd for installation.
