Looking for a volunteer with linux installed on their dt

Post by serialjoepsycho »

I won't some one to test out something. I want you to use this software on your dt and test it out: http://www.mondorescue.org/

It's a disk cloning software. The website should pretty much tell you what to do. Pretty much if it works it will allow you to copy your OS to USB. That USB should then be bootable and be able to transfer that copy of your OS to your webdt and for that matter any other webdt that is the same model as yours. If you have tested it and you trust that it works I ask that you do another test. Format the Hard drive on your webdt so that there is no OS on your webdt then use what you have done on the usb to copy the os back on to your webdt. when ever it does that reboot and disconnect the usb flash dongle. If your os loads well then there will be no doubt that it works. After that you basically can take that USB flashdrive  and attach it to your desktop, copy  the files to your computer, and compress it. You can that upload that compressed copy online so it can be downloaded. Some one can then download it, decompress it and transfer it over to usb flash drive and pop that usb flash drive into their webdt and load it onto their webdt hard drive. After it's done they should be able to reboot, remove that flash drive and when it boots up it should work exactly like yours. I'm poor at explaining things so I hope this came across clear.. If you try it and get it to work essentially we walk away with an installer that will be able to be used on any distro that has mondo rescue package available.

Hm, interesting concept.

But hasn't Ghost already got this in spades? I choose Ghost's FAST/HIGH compression options, then I ultra-7z the GHO file using 7zip on my Windows 7 rig, and that compresses it even more.

Still, I'll give it a go.

I wasn't aware that norton Ghost worked on linux. Further more if it does work it isn't free this is  FOSS. You do have Norton Ghost but other people here that may create an image may not have norton ghost. This is available to everyone and it might be easier to install with than dd. It gives those kind enough to make an image an installer of sorts (if it works) and makes it easier to install for those who might partake in such kindly offerings. Sort of win win.
And thank you for testing it.

True, it may be a bit of a win win situation. It seems pretty interesting, I might download the ISO and see if It'll boot off the WebDT.

There is no such thing as a free lunch.

It don't work that way as I understand it. You get the package for your distro and install it and then run it and then iy makes a bootable copy.

It's not exactly the same process you are used to but it goes along way to ensure compatibility when copying and transferring on os to another system that is exactly the same.
