How to eliminate a USB hub and a bunch of wires when interfaceing with your DT

Postby quotaholic » Fri May 01, 2009 3:15 pm

Hey Everyone,

Gotta say thank you to everyone here. I have learned so much in the past month. Recently I learned of a great tool that helped me eliminate a lot of wiring, a ubs hub, one keyboard and a mouse all together when I interface with my DT.

Synergy is a cross platform solution that is two part. Right now I have the server running on my apple computer. Over wifi I am able to configure the sharing of the keyboard and the mouse almost as a how a second monitor would act. I bring the pointer to the left side of my screen on the mac and keep going left. With no lag whatsoever the pointer appears on my DT. Keyboard is about the same thing. Click on the window you with to type in and viola. Configuration was pretty startight forward and requires the running of the client on the DT.

Win:
http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?group_id=59275&filename=SynergyInstaller-1.3.1.exe&a=80035752

Linux:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=406637
for rpm and source
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=synergy
For debian

For Slackware

Thanks go to Foxx for bringing this amazing tool to my attention.

Edit** While this works very well for desktop usage please know that running wifi and bluetooth sannning utilities may disrupt the linking between the client and the server. Especially if you are sharing a bluetooth keyboard.

I use a similar trick but use VNC.

You can install VNC server on the DT and then use either x2vnc if your machine with the keyboard and mouse is a Linux/MAC machine or Win2VNC if it is windows to send the keyboard and mouse events to the WebDT.

The other great thing about VNC is you can connect to it using vncviewer from other machines and it then acts as a complete remote control solution (kind of like PCAnywhere or Go2MyPC).

You are very welcome Quote', glad you enjoy synergy. I use it in my livingroom, and lab. It definitely cuts down the mess of keyboards and mice.

TightVNC, Real VNC, and Ultra VNC is also a good cross platform VNC Servers and clients. *Hint hint!*

Here is an idea of my livingroom setup. I also have VNC on my 2 PDAs, as well as VNC and Synergy on my nokia n800, which you cant see in this pic. Yes, I work on all of those machines at once... while watching tv. >:}
