[INSTALL VIA USB] Useful (IMHO) hint

Post by ::PHLAVIO:: »

Hello everyone,

I'd like to make know to anyone having troubles with installing any flavour of XP
via this kind of structure:

powered USB CD-ROM drive + USB keyboard -> unpowered USB hub -> DT366

that lenght and diameter of the cables you're using do matter a lot.

Since yesterday when my beloved DT366 arrived I have tried literally dozens of
different combinations of hubs, cables, drives and keyboards and the resulting
rule of thumb appeared to be the following:

The shorter and the thicker the USB cabling, the better.

This appeared to be true also if you're using a powered USB hub; I don't know for
sure whether this depends on data noise immunity or power issues but, since with
some thin USB cables I obtained erratic behaviours during Windows installation, I
guess it's a data related issue.

I had to experiment with that because I need to keep my DT carrying bag as much
smaller and lighter as I can, thus avoiding powered USB with the related power supply.
Now I'm finally sitting here looking at the final stages of the installation, full of peaceful
and easy feelings towards the whole mankind.  ::)

Have a nice day,
