Recommended Software for XP installs

Post by Foxx »

A lot of us are running Windows XP on our tablets, but there isnt much space with only 512MB of Flashrom. If you have any good software advice, post it here. Please keep it freeware or open source, and make sure if its going to try and install pointless toolbars and addons, let us know beforehand. Every megabyte saved is a megabyte earned.

I use K-Melion as a browser, its based off of the Firefox Gecko core and works just as well as bloated Firefox

On Screen Keyboard, In-Scribe. This one is a must have!:

Winamp 2.76 for playing music (google it). Its much lighter than Windows media player, VLC, and current versions of winamp.

If you are hell bent on using VLC, try out VLC Portable:

Notepad++ for text editing:
http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/

Need to Instant Message, try Miranda IM, it does all the IM networks:

Im a major IRC whore, mIRC all the way baby!:
www.mirc.com - 30 day trial, but after that it just nags you.

Are you a Wireless Warrior?
http://www.netstumbler.com/downloads/  For scanning and mapping wifi
https://labs.arubanetworks.com/releases/BlueScannerSetup_1_1_2_0_1.exe For scanning bluetooth devices.
http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/mmsstv/ For doing Slow Scan TV (this one is cool!)
http://mmhamsoft.amateur-radio.ca/mmtty/index.html For doing Radio TTY
http://www.davee.com/scanrec/ Need something that can record with VOX and squelch control? This could be an evil tool to have in general.

To be continued....

There are a couple of flash pen suites that work fairly well. I even tried gimp from one of them. Some are a bit slow to load but work fairly well after loading. You could transfer some of the progs over to the hard drive. Most of the software is a portable version and is smaller than it's counterpart and works just the same. Put them on a flash drive and try them and if they do you well then put copy the ones you like to the HD

maybe I should type those in?

Lupo pensuite http://www.lupopensuite.com/
portable apps http://portableapps.com/

I've tried these and I think these are all opensource

here's also a list of some other resources free and not free and I think a few can be used to make apps you like portable and perhaps smaller and I think a few are other pen suites. Any who hope that helps

Currently I am using SPB Backup. Is there anyone that can give me some feedback on Microsofts "My Phone" free backup software? Is there any downside to using it?

Uhhh, thats Windows Mobile software, not Windows XP. What the hell are you talking about?

If you want to make an image of the OS, you can use DriveImage XML included with BartPE. Both are free tools.
