My experience with Xubuntu 7.10

Booted using safeGraphics mode.  It was a little slow to boot, but I got a desktop.  The settings were incorrect, but they should be able to be tweaked.  since the resolutions were to high, I could not access the menu.  I someone is good a launching from a run command, a simple F2 brings up the run dialog.

The Bad: File system on /dev/hda not recognized.  Says not a valid partition table.  ACPI not enabled, a little funkieness with wifi, not bad,

I hit F2 and opened a terminal

Code: Select all

xfce4-terminal
I ran a few commands to see if wireless was up.

Here is a little about what dmesg showed, see attached.

Also I just edited /etc/network/interfaces to include my wireless info.  Odd thing is the wifi card was picked up on eth0 not Wlan.  After adding the essid, channel, and mode a simple restart of networking and I was online.

See also output on networking restart.

I did get a checker board effect on the screen after applying the networking restart, a simple mouse movement brought the desktop back.

Yes, there is some suspect that the cisco card and ubuntu (8.04 and up) don't play well together. At least in the versions I was trying. Good to know though. They also said that if you were having problems to remove the card and try booting again.

For some reason the wifi driver detects a wifi0 but eth0 gets the system hand off. If its working in 7.04 that's great! Isn't there an Ubuntu Mini remix on that platform?

didnt go to well. The small install iso's they offer on the website didn't work for me and when I followed their instructions with the alternate larger iso's my screen blanked out. Didnt break with other bunutu's just blanked out. What I found frustrating what the broken link to the 7.04. I tried 6.06.

I haven't had much time to mess around.

I wanted to clarify.  I was using the Gutsy release of Xubuntu, which is 7.10 not 7.04.

I am not sure how much of a difference it would make.  I just wanted to confirm.

After I read your reply on the mini's I found two links.  One about the remix which you specified and the other about the minimal install.  We may be interested in both.

Here are the links I was working off.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

http://ubuntu-mini-remix.crealabs.it/

What makes this interesting is if we can get a minimal Xubuntu 7.10 working, adding the Mythbuntu package should be a snap.

Wow,
Thanks for catching that. I am sloppy. Been doing too many hours on the website here. I have a little time. Let me see what I can find out with the links you provided. I think we are on the same thought level here.

PS I split this to its own topic as it seemed the right thing.

hi there,

I haven't tried any of this stuff yet - I'm waiting to install a larger drive.

Nonetheless, I've found some links concerning Ubuntu that you might find useful;

http://appleby.is-a-geek.net/mpcl/index.html

http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/minimal

The first link concerns another PC based on the Geode GX533. I presume the architecture would be quite similar.

Further googling on GX533 +ubuntu also gave me this link;

http://jsco.org/dectop/

Which is about installing the much older Ubuntu 6.06 on another GX533 system (the "decTOP").

My intention is to install a SSD or IDE-to-CF adaptor as the main drive, and then additionally put a CF card in the CF slot to use as an extra swap drive. I believe that this will give better performance than having the swap on the same drive as the boot.

Has anyone tried upgrading the RAM on these things? Is that even possible - or is it soldered directly on?

cheers!
