Anyone try a PCMCIA USB2.0 Card?

Post by Foxx »

The topic says it all. Has anyone tried a USB 2.0 PCMCIA USB card? There are two main types, ones that are nice and flat and use connector cables to hook into the card:

Then there are ones with the USB ports built into a bulkhead:

I was wondering with the recessed design of the WebDT if this type of card would fit. Can anyone confirm this?

As you suspected, the bulky type does not work.

you may be able to remove the plastic shroud  of the bulky one to make it fit :)

I am not sure if USB-PCMCIA would exceed power specs  but the bunduled Cisco 350 PCMCIA uses 600mA power.

Darn. I was hoping to just have the device stick out of the top of the DT. I planned on using a USB Wifi card, WiSpy, perhaps a USB thrumbdrive now and again. I doubt this would exceed 600mA of total drain.

You can see the WiSpy in another post of mine.

Thanks for the info.

Sorry for refreshing this old topic, but I tried to use PCMCIA USB 2.0 card VIA 6XXX chipset , bulkhead one with 4 usb ports and power slot [wire included to steal power from USB port or from PS2 port]
card fits well , all drivers have been installed.
But after plugging in pendrive it didn't work , diode in my pendrive didn't flash at all.
After connecting additional power from USB port, system crashed with BSOD.

Another PCMIA card - 2 port SATA works good, ethernet 10/100"bulkhead" card didn't fit, FireWire 3 port card "bulkhead" didn't fit, Aterm Atheros 54AG wifi card fits well and working good, "slim type"PCMCIA to IDE controler of course fits and works.

Do you mean sata PCMCIA?As far as I remember it's based  on VIA chip.

You can use much bigger cf card, for sure up to 16 GB 133X.
I've got 8 GB X133 Kingstone Elite PRO.

PCMCIA RFID reader should work.
You can use RFID USB as well, so there is no need to remove cf disk.

So did anyone try this sort of USB PCMCIA?

I had to verify my words about usb PCMCIA card.
After reinstalling MicroXP sp3, I copied all missing files from another sp3 [not sp2] distribution, and now my 4 USB PCMCIA with additional power slot working ;D great with 4 devices at once.[2 pendrives, wifi mouse usb receiver, RFID usb]

So I think, every PCMCIA should work with dt366 unless it's too short to reach connection pins, or plastic head with ports is too thick.
Of course, if possible anyone could try tear up the head a little to make it thinner.

Thanks for reply and information.I still use CE 5.0 , should learn how to install windows xp ... As I understood all the devices should work with XP or Linux with necessary drivers.I use the Wireless-G Notebook Adaptor WPC54G ver.3 I use it under CE and the power light works but no connection.I tried to remove the extra part from the card but you should not try it.I think It would work on XP.Once I instal it I let you know.I was looking for a card as you use but what do you think if that card has a connection as the orginal card has so you can exactly change it and make it look original with the antenna ?

All of the PCMCIA wifi cards I have worked under XP/Linux so far. The only issue was drivers in general, but... being that its XP/Linux, its not a hardware issue. (I mean, some cards under linux arent supported. Everything in XP works just fine)
